“WOW.”

Even Fernando is unsure of whether or not he’s pretending to be impressed. The display was far from kyle lopez or Katherine Fairburne at their prime but considering what he expected, Angelo exceeds all expectations. It’s eye-catching, really.

“You’re pretty good.”

Fernando’s Gliscor sits in its Pokeball, fainted. The challenge washes up with his loss and the crowd dissipates after a small cheer. The mechanical walkways recline as both challengers exit the podium.

He meets his opponent halfway, hand extended.

“I hope you’ve been battling at that level throughout the tournament. That would make you an easy contender as a top ranking trainer.”

Major shudders in mid-air, RECOIL crackling over his plumage like static electricity. Yet as he lands before Angelo with a hop and a proud inflation of his ruffled chest feathers, he appears befitting of his final BRAVE BIRD attack. [break][break]

Angelo takes the time to praise the Swellow with a crooked tail pinion before returning Major to his pokeball for a rest. [break][break]

“Thanks. You're not so bad yourself.” He casually responds with an amused exhale from his nose, lazily quirking a brow at the Gym Leader’s reaction. “We just got lucky with the wind being on our side at the end there. Could’ve gone south fast, if not.” [break][break]

Brave Bird was always a little reckless (although that was part of the charm, Angelo thought) but at the very least, they’d made it a calculated risk with by taking advantage of the wind direction… Luck was only a part of it. [break][break]

Angelo meets his opponent halfway and extends his hand, calloused fingers squeezing in a firm shake; his smile smooth in contrast. [break][break]

“Giving it a shot but that's easier said than done when you’ve got paintball fights and Mantine surfing competitions going on.” Angelo’s expression foretells that he doesn’t mind - that a challenge is a challenge. “Tried out that scene for yourself or are you keeping it traditional?”

BEGRUDGINGLY, FERNANDO AGREES. Luck is a core aspect of battle. But to hear so many trainers discount their own abilities is oppression of their potential. The humility gets lost somewhere in the insincerity of their dismissal.

But that's strictly in his head. Nothing but a small smile and firm shake when his unnaturally smooth and soft hands match Angelo’s squeeze. Unlike his arms, the shake is anything but limp. These noodles are strong, embittered with a hardness that comes from being left out until they go stale.

“Fair.”

Fernando smile dies behind a flash of teeth. He lets a chuckle stifle his inner distaste for casual contest while his body language guides the other for a walk away from the arena.

“A bit. Unfortunately, a Gym Leader’s job is never done. Traditional battles are the best ways to gauge a trainer’s abilities. Well, battling in general.”

Fernando’s handshake betrays the soft appearance of his arms. But while they aren’t limp like spaghetti left sitting in water for too long maybe, like noodles that have been left out and gone stale, they’re brittle instead… [break][break]

“That’s fair.” Angelo echoes, musing on a casual hum as they step away from the arena; heat beating down on the back of his neck.[break][break]

As much as studying for his written exam could be a drag, Angelo was loathe to admit that the cool temperature of the Sotally Tober kitchen was incredibly tempting right about now. Later. He’d have to, anyway – this was but a break from his summer lessons. [break][break]

“Sounds tough,” even though he’s rather unsympathetic towards the Ex-Councilman’s never-ending plight, Angelo keeps it to himself. Expertly bottled up behind a small curl of his mouth and an arched brow. “Maybe some non-traditionals will help shake things up a bit. Keep you on your toes. Adapt to new challenges and all that.” [break][break]

A pause, hands slipping into his pockets. “They can’t have all been bad, surely?”

“PERHAPS.”

It’s a welcome thought but Fernando stays to his own temperament.

“But some of these non-traditional formats seems more like games and traditional sport than a gauge of ability. Not to discount the athleticism behind them, but when we need to rely on proven trainers, we need to know they’re capable of battling.”

Therein lies the stark difference between Silph and some of the other Gym Leaders that have found tenure in Hoenn. Fernando offers a slight sneer despite it, shooting a sharper look at Angelo in return.

“Otherwise, I would have never guessed how capable a trainer such as yourself truly is.”

Not everyone earns the recognition of Fernando’s ‘wow’.

Battles continue around them and their walk steers them away from the battlefield.

“They’re never bad. Just a bit much. Like running through a gauntlet.”

He points at a stand. “Care for a drink?”

(You’d think Silph was talent scouting for soldiers; which, Angelo supposes, given Rocket’s recent activity wouldn’t be amiss for a councilman. Former or not.) [break][break]

“Still,” Angelo puts in, a piece to be said even if its just to add his own opinion into the mix or from savouring the last dregs of competitiveness that still remains. “It’s good to let off a bit of steam. Last thing the League needs is for those proven trainers of yours to burn out… especially these days.”[break][break]

That slight sneer, the sharpness, does not go amiss. But the sight is one that does not incite offense. Instead, it makes Angelo’s lips curl subtly at the corners, as if taking satisfaction that there did in fact lie some wrinkles beneath a crisp, straightlaced exterior. It gives the Gym Leader more likeability - just a little. [break][break]

“Good thing I didn’t challenge you to a watermelon eating contest, then.” [break][break]

There’s a lull in conversation as they walk, Angelo kicking back a ball that had gone astray from the one of the non-traditionals Fernando was so taken by. [break][break]

“If you’re offering. Sure, why not.” Angelo’s smile is unrepentant, pulled in primarily by the prospect of a free drink as he takes a turn in his trajectory to make for the stand.

HE LAUGHS. Burn out? He doesn’t understand the meaning of the word. Fernando rather kill himself from exhaustion than allow his time to slip away meaninglessly. The fact he’s almost done it—to the chagrin of his doctors, is something he keeps to himself. It goes without saying, he expects everyone else to keep pace.

But such expectations are unreasonable. He knows this and reluctantly concedes to Angelo’s point. “True, I suppose. But those can be reserved for battles against other trainers.”

Unbeknownst to him, there is a trainer that indulges in such challenges. They also happen to be a Gym Leader. Such news would earn a stark disapproval, at least in secret, but Fernando counts Angelo’s little slip as a joke.

“Are they counting that these days? What’s next? Building sandcastles?”

Angelo takes a long, stretched pause trying to contemplate how building sandcastles could be equated to battle techniques or adaptability but ends up falling short. He can’t spin that one. [break][break]

“Might be helpful for… Could train a pokemon's…” He laughs, blissfully unaware of who Silph’s opponent had been. “Alright, I’ll give you that one. Probably not going to find your next elite trainer building sandcastles.” [break][break]

In the skies, another battle between birds is ongoing, another risky manoeuvre pulled as they stroll along the edges of the battlefield. A Talonflame gives chase after a Swanna, body aglow with Brave Bird as they plunge down towards the sand, no doubt the swan attempting to give it the slip by ascending last moment. [break][break]

With the wind direction and speed, however… [break][break]

“Might want to let these guys pass, Silph.” He casually raises a hand out in front of the businessman, pausing mid-step to let the Talonflame soar by as it offshoots its course; heat trailing as the wind guides it lower and closer than it – or perhaps the trainer on the side-lines – probably intended. [break][break]

Angelo waits for the updraft of suffocating heat to dissipate, then footsteps in the sand resume. “Make that drink a cold one.”

FERNANDO TAKES HEED FROM THE FLYING SPECIALIST. His mastery in the air certainly gave his Gliscor the slip. Watching his beast pull a last moment Immelmann turn through sheer ACROBATICS to sneak into a U-TURN should’ve cinched the turning point for the battle. A testament to how agile the opposing Swellow was able to adapt.

“Fair.”

The mention of drinks hints at further endeavors. Why stop at just one when they can shoot shot for shot in the perpetual onboarding of a Ferris Wheel cabin.

“You doing anything tonight? I heard Trashy Rascal’s is having a special for native trainer.”

Did he classify as a native? Probably not. Oh well, he could just say he was; Silph seemed keen to have a drink with him, so Angelo’s sure he wouldn’t rat him out to the Trashy Rascal authorities. [break][break]

“But yeah, I probably will. It’s kinda been the go-to place.” Trashy Rascals had lived up to its name and as it so often is filled with people he knows, Angelo’s found it’s a great place to have a bit of fun, kick his feet up on a chair and mooch some free drinks. It’s easy to wash down the taste of guilt with tequila when your wallet is perpetually empty, even more so these days with a courier job packed in and an expensive new venture taken. [break][break]

“Want to do a few more battles first. Rumour has it I’m ‘pretty good’,” his lips curl, eyes trained ahead towards the approaching bar in the distance as battles rage close by. Nonchalant with a slow, lazy smirk. “Sure you say that to all the opponents.” Or guys. Probably guys, too.

It’s a more genuine question than not. Fernando quirks an eyebrow, unsure on how to read into his joke. He knows little about Angelo so it’s a nice piece of information to phish for.

At the request for battle, Fernando flicks his right hand over several balls. He counts them, mentally checking off the Pokemon inside in a bid to find one that hasn’t been exhausted. The nature of Angelo’s teasing goes right over his head; he accepts the inquiry and the challenge that comes with it.

“Yeah. Been here about… Three years now, actually.” Technically, he was originally meant to be heading back to college this September but, as many would come to understand, plans change in Hoenn. Now, this was where home was – where she was. [break][break]

An eyebrow is raised towards Fernando when he sees him sort through his pokeballs. He hadn’t meant another battle with the Gym Leader when he said that he was looking for more battles before hitting the bar scene later that night but something compels him to not correct the man on his blunder. [break][break]

Silph had been a challenging battle, one that Angelo had had to draw upon his specialties to best… Would he cope as well now that he had shown where his talents lay? [break][break] Before he knows it, calloused fingertips are latched around a standard red and white capsule. The competition sings like a siren song in his blood.

“What do you say… Best two out of three?”
